AirBadminton: Benin secures silver and spot at World Championships
Benin finished as the runner-up in the African Team Relay after losing 60-57 to Egypt on Thursday in Entebbe. Their semi-final victory had already secured a place at the 2026 BWF World Championships.
Benin claimed the silver medal in the Team Relay at the 2026 African AirBadminton Championships on Thursday, September 17, in Entebbe, Uganda, following a narrow 60-57 defeat to Egypt in the final. This second-place finish also secures a qualification for the 2026 BWF AirBadminton World Championships, achieved earlier in the day.
Facing the defending continental champions, the Cheetahs and the Amazons stayed competitive until the final exchanges before losing by three points. Egypt thus retains the Team Relay title they won in the previous edition.
Benin’s World Championship ticket was confirmed in the semi-finals with a 60-50 victory over Mauritius. In the other semi-final, Egypt dominated Burkina Faso 60-32 before meeting the Beninese team for the title.
Benin’s journey began with a 60-37 victory against Algeria in Group A. The team then defeated Tunisia by the same score, 60-37, to advance to the knockout stage.
The Beninese Team Relay squad included Carlos Miguel Kpanou, Oswald Fano-Dosh, and Julien Totin for the men, along with Gladys Akakpo, Blessing Atchade, and Flora Kpogbemabou for the women.
Following the team event, the African Championships continue at Aero Beach with other competition brackets. The continental event is scheduled to run until September 19 in Entebbe.
