Abomey-Calavi: several businesses devastated by a fire along the wholesale market road at Akassato
A challenging morning broke over Akassato, in the Abomey-Calavi municipality. In the early hours of Tuesday, August 11, 2026, a strong fire broke out on the paved road leading to the Gros market, formerly known as Kérékou square, causing significant material damage.
The fire quickly spread to several commercial establishments along the route. Among the affected establishments are a company specialized in mattresses, a point of sale for contraband fuel, a Mobile Money (MoMo) financial services outlet, and multiple other surrounding shops and stalls.
Although the material loss is particularly heavy for those affected who saw their equipment and stock destroyed, there have been no casualties reported.
Emergency response and investigation launched
Alerted by local residents, firefighters were deployed to the scene to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to the rest of the market. After several maneuvers, the fire was completely brought under control.
Republican police secured the perimeter to facilitate operations and conduct necessary assessments. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown for now and will be the subject of an investigation aimed at determining the precise causes and assessing the total losses suffered by the merchants.
