2026 General Elections: the Catholic Church calls for free, transparent and inclusive elections

The Episcopal Conference of Benin (CEB) launched, on Wednesday 22 October 2025, a strong appeal to the political class and all citizens. Through the final communiqué of its plenary session held in Porto-Novo, the Beninese bishops are urging the organization of general elections “free, transparent and inclusive,” in a climate of peace and responsibility.

Meeting under the presidency of Mgr Roger Houngbédji, archbishop of Cotonou and president of the CEB, the prelates insisted on the need for each actor in the electoral process — institutions, political parties, civil society and citizens — to prioritize the supreme interest of the Nation.

“These elections should be, for all of us, an opportunity to demonstrate our democratic maturity and our love for Benin,” they declared, while stressing the importance of dialogue, tolerance and respect for republican laws.

The bishops also encourage Catholic faithful and all believers to intensify prayer for peace, justice and truth throughout the electoral process. They reaffirm their commitment to play a role of moral and spiritual oversight in order to preserve social cohesion and the country’s stability.

This appeal comes at a pivotal moment for Benin, as the country prepares to undergo a major political phase. The Catholic Church, faithful to its mission as guardian of ethical values and social peace, reminds that the true victory of an election is measured not by the attainment of power, but by the strength of democracy and the dignity of the people.
