Women’s AFCON 2026 (Q): the Amazons on a “remontada” mission in Nigeria
The Benin women’s national team arrived in Nigeria on Sunday, determined to take on a huge challenge: overturn the Super Falcons in the second-leg tie of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, to be held in Morocco.

They left Lomé in the afternoon, landing in Lagos before traveling by road to Abeokuta. It is in that city that the decisive match will be played on Tuesday, 28 October at 14:00 GMT. The day before the game, the Amazons will hold their official pitch reconnaissance at the MKO Abiola Stadium, to get their bearings ahead of the big clash.
Having lost 2-0 in the first leg at the Kégué Stadium, the Beninese know they’ll need a real feat to hope to snatch qualification. The Super Falcons, eleven-time African champions, remain favorites, but the Benin squad shows a fighting spirit and a clear desire to spring a surprise.
« We have nothing left to lose, we’ll go after our chances until the end », a player said on arrival. The Amazons will therefore try to write a new page in their history, against one of the greatest nations in African women’s football.
