US Open 2026: Khachanov comes back to beat Tien in five sets and reaches the quarterfinals

Karen Khachanov overturned American Learner Tien on Monday 7 September in New York, 7-5, 4-6, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 6-4, to qualify for the US Open quarterfinals 2026 after 3 h 50 of play.

Down two sets to one, the Russian regained control in the fourth set, winning 6-1, before closing out the fifth set 6-4 at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Khachanov marks his seventh Grand Slam quarterfinal and his second in New York after 2022. He caused one of the tournament’s upsets in the second round by eliminating Felix Auger-Aliassime, then seeded number 3.

Learner Tien’s run ends in the round of 16 after a campaign in which the American notably defeated Gaël Monfils and Jakub Mensik. Seeded number 14, he was aiming for his first quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows.

Khachanov will now face Belgian Alexander Blockx, seeded number 28, who defeated Francisco Cerundolo in four sets and qualified for his first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

In another section of the men’s draw, Ben Shelton eliminated Stefanos Tsitsipas and is set to face Carlos Alcaraz for a place in the semifinals.
