Uganda: Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma named new king of Tooro

Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma was named on Wednesday, 9 September in Fort Portal, in westernUgandato succeed Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV as head of the traditional Tooro kingdom. The decision by the Babiito royal clan comes after the death of the sovereign on 27 August in the United States.

According to the resolution read by Bishop Isaiah Mayombo on behalf of the Babiito, a succession committee of 21 members selected Kijanangoma after consultations. The document, signed by 19 members, specifies that his enthronement must take place according to the customs and traditions of Tooro.

The newly designated sovereign is a journalist, presenter, and editor at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), the Ugandan public broadcaster. He is the son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and the grandson of former King George David Rukidi III, placing him within the Babiito dynastic lineage.

The Tooro kingdom, located in western Uganda and centered on Fort Portal, holds no executive power within the Ugandan Republic. Like other traditional monarchies restored in the country, it nevertheless retains strong cultural and social influence among its subjects.

A succession marked by competing claims

Kijanangoma’s designation comes after several days of debate over the identity of the successor. Reuters reports that the kingdom’s prime minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire, had previously stated that King Oyo left behind a child presented as his heir. Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported a public challenge from Princess Ruth Komuntale, the late sovereign’s sister, who cites a will attributed to her brother.

The Babiito clan, however, maintained that the monarch’s designation falls under its customary authority. According to The Observer, citing a statement from the office of the Omusuuga, head of the royal clan, the committee of 21 members was specifically established to oversee the succession following Oyo’s passing.

Oyo’s funeral scheduled for Saturday

Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV died on 27 August in the United States, where he was receiving treatment for cancer. He ascended the throne in September 1995, at the age of three, following the death of his father, Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, becoming the youngest reigning monarch in the world according to Guinness World Records.

His body was repatriated to Uganda last week. The traditional authorities of Tooro are to continue the rites leading to the enthronement of Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma. Oyo’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, 12 September at the royal tombs near the Fort Portal palace.
