Tyla and TikTok revive glitter tattoos, the Y2K touch for skin decoration

Glitter tattoos are making a comeback in beauty videos on TikTok as September 2026 begins. Trend forecasting agency NellyRodi has identified them as one of the signals of the month, featuring iridescent butterflies, metallic stars, and silver designs that are moving beyond childhood themes to fit party and festival looks.

The movement has already found a prominent African ambassador. In July, South African singer Tyla showcased a temporary glitter tattoo reading “A*POP” on her lower back during an event in London celebrating her second album. This detail complemented a very early 2000s look, complete with low-rise jeans, rhinestones, and body glitter.

The trend goes beyond mere nostalgia. In the spring, Zara Larsson also sported numerous sparkling butterflies and temporary body decorations during her American tour. On social media, these designs are now reappearing as full-fledged beauty accessories, designed to catch the light rather than mimic real tattoos.

The effect varies significantly depending on the chosen material. Silver versions create a jewelry-like effect, while gold, copper, purple, or holographic finishes can blend better with an outfit or match makeup colors. On darker skin, metallic finishes also create a particularly visible contrast in photos and under evening lights.

Application is typically done using a stencil and skin-safe adhesive, or with a pre-prepared temporary design. Areas less prone to friction, such as the shoulder, upper back, or forearm, hold up better than hands and creases. Clean, dry skin also helps the design remain sharp.

Caution is advised when a product remains on the skin for several hours. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has noted that allergic reactions have been reported with certain temporary tattoos and recommends testing the product on a less visible area before applying it to the face. Glitter and adhesives should be explicitly labeled for cosmetic use, rather than repurposed from craft supplies.

To remove the design without rubbing the skin, oily formulas or dual-phase makeup removers are generally the most effective. The product can be left on the area for a few moments before gently wiping it away, especially when the adhesive still holds glitter particles.
