Rwanda-Tanzania: Military meeting in Nyagatare on border security

Military commanders from Rwanda and Tanzania are convening from September 9 to 11, 2026, in Nyagatare, eastern Rwanda, to enhance security along their shared border. The meeting involves the 5th Infantry Division of the RDF and the 202nd Infantry Brigade of the TPDF.

This marks the 16th so-called proximity commanders’ meeting between the two forces deployed on either side of the border. The Rwandan delegation is led by Major General Ruki Karusisi, commander of the 5th Infantry Division, while the Tanzanian side is headed by Brigadier General Gabriel Elias Kwiligwa, commander of the 202nd Brigade.

According to the Rwandan Ministry of Defense, discussions focus on shared security concerns and ways to improve cross-border coordination. The two armies aim to maintain regular communication channels between units stationed in border areas.

This meeting extends an already active bilateral mechanism. During the 15th session, held in March 2026 in the Tanzanian district of Karagwe, military officials addressed issues such as smuggling, drug trafficking, illegal fishing in border waters, and clandestine crossings. They also agreed to enhance information sharing, coordinated patrols, and community awareness initiatives.

Close military cooperation

The Rwandan daily The New Times reports that Ruki Karusisi emphasized the importance of direct communication between neighboring commands to maintain security and stability in the area. Gabriel Elias Kwiligwa, for his part, highlighted the continuity of commitments made during previous meetings.

The Tanzanian delegation also visited the Inyange powdered milk factory in Nyagatare, where local officials presented the site’s activities. The proceedings of the 16th meeting are set to continue until Friday, September 11, 2026.
