Cashmere eyes: the soft brown smoky look rising in 2026
Taupe, chocolate, or espresso, the gaze is now crafted in a soft halo rather than a deep black smoky. This trend was spotted on the runways and highlighted this week by several beauty media.

The heavily defined black smoky eye is giving way to a softer version. Dubbed the “cashmere eye,” this makeup envelops the gaze in shades of brown, taupe, or espresso, applied without sharp edges, with intensity built up in subtle layers.
The trend was highlighted on September 8 by Who What Wear, following the autumn-winter 2026 fashion shows. Makeup artist Fara Homidi describes a monochromatic look, blended all around the eye, in tones chosen according to skin tone. Brown mascara enhances this soft effect when aiming for a very harmonious look.
The movement is not limited to a single name. Glamour refers to “suede eye shadow,” a matte smoky inspired by suede, while NewBeauty notes a similar resurgence of espresso, chocolate, olive, plum, or charcoal shadows worked without harsh edges. In both cases, the compact black and highly structured gradients of the 2010s are receding in favor of a softer finish.
To achieve this look, a single color can suffice across the entire mobile eyelid. It is first applied near the lashes, then blended towards the crease and the outer corner of the eye with a clean brush or finger. The product remains slightly transparent to maintain depth without weighing down the gaze.
The right brown largely depends on contrast.
On light to medium skin, a taupe, hazelnut brown, or warm gray quickly creates this velvety effect. On darker complexions, espresso, deep chocolate, plum, or bronze tones provide more contrast. Femina notably highlighted smoky espresso on golden undertones in early September, using a medium brown to diffuse and a darker shade along the lash line.
The finish also alters the result. A matte eyeshadow gives the most faithful “cashmere” appearance, while a slightly satin bronze captures more light for an evening look. The rest of the makeup can remain understated, with a light complexion and a nude, brown, or pink lip.
The contours should remain blurred rather than perfectly symmetrical. Glamour recommends a semi-transparent application and softly blended edges, allowing the color to remain visible without recreating the very dense smoky look that this trend seeks to avoid.
