“This Nigeria isn’t inspiring,” Sunday Mba slams the Super Eagles
Disappointed by Nigeria’s performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, former international Sunday Mba sharply criticized the Super Eagles’ level, saying the team is no longer up to its continental prestige.

Former Nigerian international Sunday Mba did not mince his words after the Super Eagles’ disappointing displays in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Nigeria, unable to secure automatic qualification after finishing behind South Africa in their group, will now have to go through the play-offs to hope to reach the World Cup. Éric Chelle’s men will face Gabon in November, in a decisive tie for their future.
Asked by Ayo Olu Ibidapo, a member of the Super Eagles’ media team, Sunday Mba was particularly critical: “I’m not impressed by this team. If you’re a true football fan in Nigeria, you cannot be satisfied with what the Super Eagles are producing,” he said.
“We need to stop kidding ourselves. If we had won the matches we were supposed to win, we wouldn’t be in this worrying situation. It’s unthinkable to see the best team in West Africa still fighting for a play-off spot,” added the former 2013 AFCON hero. An outburst that reflects the growing frustration of a nation used to major tournaments but searching for certainty as the World Cup approaches.
