Niger: 34 soldiers killed in jihadist attack at Banibangou
An attack of rare intensity mourned the Nigerian armed forces this Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Banibangou, a locality located in the west of Niger, about 250 kilometers from Niamey, near the border with Mali.
According to a statement from the Nigerien Ministry of Defense, 34 soldiers were killed and 14 others injured during an assault attributed to the Islamic State group in the Sahel.
The attack was carried out in a coordinated manner by the assailants, who simultaneously converged from the south and northeast, trapping the soldiers in a pincer maneuver. The commander of the local military post is among the victims. Several state infrastructures, including the prefecture and gendarmerie stations, were vandalized, looted, and burned before reinforcements arrived.
According to security sources, alerts had been issued in the preceding days, signaling the suspicious presence of armed groups moving by motorbike in the Malian border area. However, despite these signals, the attack could not be anticipated.
This area remains one of the most active hotspots of jihadism in the Sahel. Already in 2020, the neighboring localities of Chinagodar and Inates had suffered similar assaults, causing the death of more than 200 Nigerien soldiers.
This new tragedy rekindles concerns about the persistence of the terrorist threat and the security challenges that Niger continues to face, despite efforts made in the fight against terrorism.
