Manchester derby: Pro Ref acknowledges VAR error on Haaland’s goal

Pro Ref has acknowledged a judgment error in the decision that led to the validation of Erling Haaland’s goal during Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at Old Trafford.

The goal, scored in the 60th minute, was initially disallowed for offside. After video review, Haaland was ultimately deemed to be onside, and the goal was awarded.

However, the controversy centers on Enzo Fernandez’s position. The Manchester City midfielder was in an offside position when he attempted to play the ball before Haaland’s finish. Pro Ref believes that VAR did not sufficiently consider the potential impact of this action on Manchester United’s defenders.

The officiating body contends that a pitchside review should have been recommended to referee Michael Oliver before the final validation of the goal. Manchester United contested this interpretation immediately after the match.

City played much of the derby with ten men following Phil Foden’s dismissal in the first half. Despite this numerical disadvantage, Enzo Maresca’s team secured victory thanks to Haaland’s solitary goal.

Pro Ref has stated that it contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the judgment error and announced that an investigation into the incident will be conducted.
