Benin: new warden appointed to Abomey-Calavi Civil Prison
The Ministry of Justice has appointed a new warden at the Abomey-Calavi civil prison.
This decision is part of movements within the prison administration aimed at strengthening the management of the country’s correctional facilities.
The new warden assumed his duties upon appointment and is responsible for overseeing all logistical, administrative, and disciplinary activities of the facility.
His mission includes improving the daily management of the prison, reinforcing internal discipline, and ensuring compliance with detention conditions, in accordance with current regulations.
The Abomey-Calavi civil prison, which houses a large number of inmates in pre-trial detention or serving sentences, has attracted particular attention from the authorities in recent weeks, notably after a foiled escape attempt during a recent night that mobilized prison services and security forces.
The appointment comes amid efforts to strengthen prison structures and modernize prison management in Benin. The supervising authorities expressed hope that this change in leadership will contribute to better internal organization while ensuring security.
The new head will also need to work closely with other actors in the criminal justice chain to streamline the administrative and judicial procedures related to detention.
