Benin: a footbridge planned in front of the UAC to ensure user safety
The municipality of Abomey-Calavi is considering the construction of a pedestrian bridge in front of the main entrance of the University of Abomey-Calavi. The announcement was made by Mayor Nathanaël Koty, who mentioned that this is a measure aimed at enhancing the safety of students, university staff, and the many users who cross this heavily trafficked route daily.
SUMMARY
The area in front of the main gate of UAC remains one of the critical points of traffic in Abomey-Calavi. Every day, thousands of people travel through there, including students, teachers, residents, motorcycle taxi drivers, private vehicles, and public transportation. In this context, crossing the roadway presents a constant risk, especially during peak hours.
Speaking on Bip Radio, Nathanaël Koty indicated that the municipality has contacted the Road Infrastructure and Land Development Company to study the feasibility of building a bridge at this strategic location. The goal is to better organize pedestrian movement and limit accident risks near the university.
Traffic lights also under consideration
The construction of a bridge would not be the only proposed solution. The mayor of Abomey-Calavi has also raised the issue of traffic lights in this area. Discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Living Environment and Transport to improve the traffic regulation system.
For the municipal authorities, road signage remains important but may not be sufficient on its own to ensure a safe crossing in front of UAC. Hence the idea of a pedestrian structure capable of separating vehicle and pedestrian flows on a route where traffic pressure is particularly high.
Beyond the university sector, Nathanaël Koty has also discussed other concerns related to urban mobility in the municipality. He specifically mentioned the profiling operations of certain roads and the need to further develop water transport to diversify commuting options for the population.
The mayor finally emphasized the importance of obeying traffic laws, especially near schools, universities, and health centers. For now, the pedestrian bridge project in front of UAC remains subject to technical studies and the decisions of the relevant authorities.
