Benin: A driver prosecuted for stealing fuel intended for delivery
A truck driver was caught in the middle of a delivery mission, siphoning off diesel fuel intended for sale.

The incident occurred while he was waiting for loading documents and the coordinates of the recipient gas station, located in Akpakpa.
The head of the quality control department of the hydrocarbon company raised the alarm, after noticing a pool of fuel on the ground. Upon inspecting the truck, he discovered a siphoning device installed on the tanker. The investigation reveals that the driver was trying to fill the tank of his own vehicle, which has a capacity of 200 liters.
Caught in the act, the driver was immediately arrested. The truck and its cargo were immediately immobilized on the spot.
At the hearing on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the accused tried to justify himself. According to him, he was the victim of a breakdown and just wanted to take a little diesel fuel to restart the engine and continue his delivery. He denies any fraudulent intent.
But the company does not share this version. For them, if the driver was actually in trouble, he wouldn’t have filled up his entire tank. They denounce a pure and simple diversion of fuel intended for sale, and claim 2 million FCFA in damages and interest.
The court, which noted the arguments from both sides, has postponed the matter to July 15, 2025 for the continuation of discussions.
