Benin 2026 Presidential Election: Government sets date for its candidates’ nomination
We know a bit more about the date for the selection of the presidential movement’s duo of candidates.

An important milestone has just been set in the electoral process for the 2026 general elections in Benin. At a press briefing held on Friday, June 20, 2025, the government spokesman, Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji, gave some insights on the presidential majority’s selection date.
According to his statements, the candidates from the presidential movement will officially be unveiled on October 12, 2025. This date marks a turning point, as it will allow Beninese voters to discover the personalities expected to carry the majority colors during the upcoming electoral events, notably the presidential election scheduled for April 2026.
The announcement comes as the public opinion questions who will succeed President Patrice Talon, whose term will end in May 2026. The successor will take an oath in Porto-Novo, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji specified that, regardless of the future candidate’s political profile, they will have to work in continuity with the current government’s actions.
“The next President of the Republic knows that he is expected by the Beninese people to extend the momentum of development,” he emphasized, citing the economic, social, and diplomatic results recorded since 2016.
