Barça 0-2 Atlético: Salomon Kalou laments Ademola Lookman’s overly defensive role

Kalou’s analysis did not go unnoticed after Atlético Madrid’s victory over FC Barcelona (2-0), on Wednesday, in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. According to the former Chelsea FC forward, Ademola Lookman did not operate in his usual register during this match. Slotted in a more defensive role, the Nigerian international could not fully express his offensive qualities.

Transferred this winter from Atalanta, Lookman had a difficult evening at Camp Nou. Replaced in the second half by Alexander Sørloth, the latter sealed the Madrid side’s victory by scoring the second goal. Earlier, Julián Álvarez had opened the scoring with a superb free-kick, deceiving Joan García. In an interview given to SuperSport, Salomon Kalou detailed his analysis:
« In this kind of match, I’m sure he didn’t enjoy it because he had to focus more on defense than on attack. »

Despite this subdued performance, the Ivorian made a point of defending the player: « His strength lies in his ability to go forward, but even when we win, there is a great sense of satisfaction in going home, aware of the possibility of qualifying for the semi-finals. » Before concluding with optimism: « I hope he reaches that level because he is an exceptional player, and all Africans will hail him. » Despite this quiet outing, Ademola Lookman remains on a solid European campaign, with two goals and four assists in twelve appearances this season.
