SUMMARY

Just days before the start of the school year on September 14, 2026, Benin plans to extend school canteens to approximately 1.9 million public school students. For the families involved, the issue is therefore not to double the midday meal at home, but to build around the canteen a simple breakfast and an appropriate snack, without turning every morning into a headache.

The start of the school year immediately brings schedules, commutes, and meals back into the same equation. This year, school meals are taking on an even more significant role in Benin: the government has announced an increase from approximately 1.4 million to 1.9 million schoolchildren benefiting from canteens in public schools. For parents, this change can also be an opportunity to simplify family organization.

The idea is not to seek a “perfect” menu. The recommendations of the World Health Organization emphasize above all the diversity of foods, the role of fruits, vegetables, minimally processed cereals, and legumes, as well as the limitation of highly sugary, salty, or heavily processed products. The FAO, for its part, highlights the importance of breakfast and simple snacks for school-aged children.

At breakfast, aim for simple rather than spectacular

When lunch is planned at school, breakfast remains useful to avoid leaving on an empty stomach and to hold out until the midday meal. An easy-to-remember format consists of combining a filling base, a food providing protein, and, if possible, a fruit.

In a Beninese kitchen, this can take very ordinary forms: corn or millet porridge enriched with a little peanut paste, bread with egg, beans or cheese, sweet potato with a dairy product, or lightly sweetened cereals accompanied by a seasonal fruit. It is not necessary to multiply the elements if time is short.

The practical point is above all to avoid building the morning around very sugary drinks, biscuits, or pastries alone. They can be consumed occasionally, but they are a poor substitute for a more varied breakfast.

Afternoon snacks do not need to become a second lunch

After school, the snack can remain light, especially if the midday meal was complete. The FAO lists among the simple options fruits, cooked eggs, bread, sweet potato, corn, dairy products, or oilseeds depending on age and family habits.

Specifically, a banana with a small handful of peanuts, a piece of bread with an egg, plain yogurt with a fruit, or a portion of sweet potato may suffice. For younger children, foods must obviously be adapted to their chewing ability and any known allergies.

The most useful approach is often to prepare two or three outfits that the child already likes, then rotate them. This prevents waste and the daily scramble for ideas.

Check what the cafeteria serves before supplementing at home

A school canteen is not intended to provide exactly the same menu every day. When the school communicates the planned meal, parents can simply avoid serving the same type of dish in the evening. If lunch has been very rich in starches, for example, dinner can make more room for vegetables, legumes, eggs, fish, or other foods available at home.

This complementary approach is more realistic than a daily nutritional calculation. It also allows for respecting the child’s habits and the household budget.

For drinks, water remains the simplest choice.

To accompany breakfast, a snack, or a school bag, water remains the beverage of choice. The WHO recommends limiting sugary drinks and reminds that juices, even without added sugar, can provide a lot of free sugars when they regularly replace whole fruit.

A clean water bottle filled with water can therefore be more useful than a flavored drink as a rule. In the heat, it is also practical to get the child used to drinking regularly rather than waiting until they are very thirsty.

The rule that changes everything: prepare the day before what can be prepared

The start of the school year quickly becomes tiring when every detail has to be decided upon waking up. A few actions the night before can suffice: washing the fruit, checking the water bottle, placing the bread or breakfast ingredients within reach, and deciding on the snack before going to bed.

For families managing several children, displaying two or three breakfast and snack options for the week can also help avoid morning negotiations. The goal is not to rigidify meals, but to reduce mental load.

What if the child refuses to eat in the morning?

Appetites vary greatly from one child to another. It is better to avoid turning breakfast into a power struggle. A small portion, a familiar food, or a portable format when school arrangements allow can be more realistic than a forced meal.

On the other hand, persistent loss of appetite, unusual fatigue, or repeated difficulties with eating should be discussed with a healthcare professional. A lifestyle article does not replace personalized medical advice.

With the expansion of school cafeterias, the 2026-2027 school year can also become an opportunity to simplify things at home: an accessible breakfast, a modest snack, and water within reach. For many families, this arrangement will likely be more sustainable than a week of elaborate menus abandoned as soon as the first busy Monday arrives.
