AFCON 2025: Swedish-Beninese striker Adam Akimey has said yes to the Cheetahs
The young Swedish-Beninese forward Adam Akimey, developed at Hammarby and coming off a fine season in Sweden, has chosen to represent Benin, convinced by coach Gernot Rohr.
Benin has added a new attacking recruit. According to Africatopsports, the 21-year-old Swedish-Beninese forward Adam Akimey has officially announced his decision to wear the Cheetahs’ colors, thus turning his back on the Swedish national team with whom he had featured for the U21s. The young striker of Helsingborg IF decided to embrace the Beninese adventure after several constructive exchanges with coach Gernot Rohr.
A graduate of Hammarby IF, a club renowned for the quality of its youth development, Akimey has made a name for himself with his eye for goal and his work rate. Transferred to Helsingborg, he has established himself as an up-and-coming talent in the Superettan (Swedish second division), scoring 4 goals and providing 2 assists this season, plus a goal in the Cup.
Explosive, technical and possessing good hold-up play, Akimey arrives at the right time to strengthen Benin’s attack, which is seeking greater efficiency. He is reportedly already on the list of players called up for the friendly against Burkina Faso, scheduled for November 18.
