AFCON 2025: CAF approves expanded 28-player squads
The Confederation of African Football has approved the increase in the number of players selected for AFCON 2025, giving teams greater flexibility to manage the physical demands and uncertainties of a month-long tournament.

The Confederation of African Football officially announced on Thursday the expansion of squads for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Each team will be able to call up up to 28 players, compared with the traditional 23. This change reflects CAF’s desire to give teams more room to manage player fitness, injuries, congested schedules and potential health issues during a month-long tournament.
The continental body also announced that up to 17 members of the technical staff will be allowed per team, to ensure comprehensive support on medical, logistical, analytical and sporting fronts. The 24 qualified nations must submit their final lists on 11 December.
Morocco will host the competition from 18 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.
