Northern Benin has once again been struck by the terrorist hydra. On the evening of Wednesday, June 4th, an armed attack targeted a post of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) in Tanougou, district of the commune of Tanguiéta, Atacora department.
According to a military source contacted by Africaho, the assault was carried out by unidentified armed men. The security forces (police and military) mounted a vigorous response. However, the attack took the lives of FDS members, according to the initial unofficial reports. At present, no official statement has been made by either the government or the Ministry of National Defense.
This attack is part of a dark series that regularly mourns the ranks of the Beninese armed forces. On April 17th, 2025, a double attack claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) resulted in the death of 54 Beninese soldiers, marking the heaviest human loss since the start of jihadist incursions in Benin in 2019.
With this new attack in Tanougou, concerns are growing about the advancement of terrorist groups along the country’s northern border, particularly in border areas with Burkina Faso and Niger. Regions are becoming increasingly vulnerable to an asymmetrical, diffuse, and difficult-to-contain threat.
Beyond the military response, a comprehensive security, intelligence, and national cohesion approach needs to be reconsidered to curb this spiral of violence.
Benin, long perceived as a haven of stability in West Africa, now faces the shadow of the Sahel extending southward.
