Tanzania: Samia Suluhu suspends official duties for 90 days
The Tanzanian president remains in office but is observing a 90-day mourning leave following the death of her husband. The vice president and prime minister are ensuring the continuity of government operations.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has suspended her official duties for 90 days starting September 7, following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, while remaining the head of state, according to a statement attributed to the Chief Secretary of the Government, Moses Kusiluka.
During this mourning period, Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi and Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba are tasked with ensuring the continuity of government operations in accordance with existing regulations. Authorities clarified that this leave does not constitute a resignation from the president.
The measure took effect on the day of Hafidh Ameir Hassan’s death, who passed away on September 7 while receiving treatment for a heart condition at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. He was buried the same day in Kizimkazi, in southern Unguja.
Vice President Ndejembi announced the death on behalf of the Tanzanian authorities. Several regional leaders subsequently extended their condolences to Samia Suluhu Hassan and to Tanzania.
Moses Kusiluka stated in his announcement on September 8 that the relevant authorities would provide further information as necessary during the leave period.
