The head of the Sudanese army and president of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met on September 10 in Khartoum with the European Union’s special envoy for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber, to discuss the political process and the return to a peaceful transition.

According to the official Sudanese news agency SUNA, the meeting also addressed cooperation projects between the European Union and the Sudanese government, as well as several regional issues. Annette Weber stated that Brussels aims to strengthen its exchanges with Sudanese authorities on matters of mutual interest.

The discussion followed consultations held in Khartoum by the Quintet, which includes the African Union, IGAD, the Arab League, the European Union, and the United Nations. This delegation met with Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Prime Minister Kamil Idris, and various Sudanese political and civil actors.

The Quintet advocates for a credible and inclusive political process and asserts that a sustainable resolution to the conflict cannot be achieved solely through military means. Its representatives have also linked the political revival to measures for civilian protection and the cessation of hostilities.

Sudan Tribune, citing diplomatic sources, reports that Annette Weber warned Abdel Fattah al-Burhan against seeking a military solution to the war. The media attributes this warning to private exchanges between the European envoy and the Sudanese leader.

The meeting on September 10 took place at the Presidential Palace, attended by Muawiya Osman Khalid, Sudan’s Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs.
