Tanguiéta: Mayor bans certain crops for security reasons
In response to the continuing threat of terrorist attacks in northern Benin, the municipality of Tanguiéta is taking unprecedented measures. By decision of the mayor, El Hadj Boukary Zachary, signed on Monday, June 9, 2025, the cultivation of corn, millet, and sorghum is now prohibited in all urban districts of the city.
This decision is part of a prevention strategy. Indeed, according to the town hall, these high-density, large-scale crops complicate visibility during security patrols and can be used as hideouts by armed individuals.
However, the measure does not apply to rural areas of the municipality. Farmers from the surrounding villages are still allowed to grow these cereals on their lands.
The town hall calls on all residents to respect this directive from its effective date, in order to ensure collective security in this particularly exposed border municipality.
