South Africa: Mkhwanazi committee requests extension for its report
As of the September 11 deadline, the MPs handling the Mkhwanazi case had not completed their review of the testimonies and documents. Their chair has approached Thoko Didiza for additional time before submitting the report.
The ad hoc committee of the Parliament of South Africa tasked with investigating allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has requested a new deadline from National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza to finalize its draft report, Parliament announced on September 11.
The previous deadline expired on September 11. Committee chair Molapi Soviet Lekganyane explained that members still needed to review a significant volume of oral testimonies, documents, and sworn statements before reaching their conclusions.
The committee was still working on the draft report the day before during deliberations announced by Parliament. Its members were engaged in a detailed reading of the contributions received and in formulating recommendations and conclusions for the preliminary report.
The committee was established following statements made in July 2025 by Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi regarding possible political interference, corruption, and the infiltration of criminal actors into certain components of the police and the criminal justice system. These elements remain allegations being examined under parliamentary oversight.
The request made to Thoko Didiza does not, by itself, extend the committee’s mandate. In its announcement on September 11, Parliament indicated that a new deadline would be communicated after the formal review of the request by the National Assembly Speaker.
The report must still be finalized before its presentation to the National Assembly. Parliament had set the previous deadline for the committee as September 11, 2026.
