Since June 30, 2025, the National Guard has implemented the “Shield” operation, a large-scale military exercise deployed in the departments of Zou, Mono, and Couffo, mobilizing more than 560 soldiers.
The goal of this operation is to reinforce the operational capacities of the Beninese forces in response to increasing security threats, particularly because of the persistent terrorist threat in the north of the country.
Under the coordination of Colonel Faïzou Gomina, with the support of Major General Fructueux Gbaguidi, Chief of General Staff, the operation is a continuation of trainings already conducted in Pira, Bassila or Djakotomey.
“It’s about testing the responsiveness and mobility of the troops in a southern context,” explained Lieutenant Colonel Valère Adamassou, director of the operation.
In addition to conventional maneuvers, specialized trainings are being organized: aquatic rescue in Cotonou, toughening in Dassa, and intensive physical exercises in Ouassa.
The operation also benefits from the active support of the air force, the Republican Police, the National Navy, and the army, in an unprecedented interforce synergy.
Lifesize simulations, such as responses to terrorist attacks and the securing of strategic sites, are also planned.
The highlight of the operation is expected on July 3 and 4, with free medico-social actions for the populations and a VIP day. It is a way for the National Guard to reaffirm its role as the shield of the Republic, while strengthening the trust between the army and the citizens.
