Nollywood: Olu Jacobs, the ‘Lion of Lufodo,’ dies at 84
Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs, a major figure in Nollywood known as the ‘Lion of Lufodo,’ has died at 84, according to his family.
Veteran Nigerian actor Olu Jacobs passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the age of 84. His family confirmed the death of the Nollywood icon in a statement released by his son, Olusoji Jacobs.
On his Instagram account, Olusoji Jacobs paid tribute to his father, whom he referred to as the ‘Lion of Lufodo,’ and requested that the family’s privacy be respected. The family announcement was reported and corroborated by Naija News, PM News Nigeria, and Punch.
Born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs on July 11, 1942, in Abeokuta, the actor trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Before becoming one of the most recognizable faces in Nollywood, he worked in theater and appeared in several British television productions.
His filmography includes over a hundred productions. His performances, voice, and roles as a patriarch accompanied the rise of Nigerian cinema and earned him numerous accolades throughout a career spanning more than five decades.
In their announcement on September 16, 2026, the family did not disclose the cause of death. Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, actress Joke Silva, and their two sons.
