Morocco: 18-24 year-olds make up only 4% of voters

With just five days to go before the legislative elections on September 23, 2026, Morocco has 15,801,162 registered voters, but those aged 18 to 24 account for only 4% of the electorate. This low representation of younger voters comes at a time when employment and purchasing power are central issues in the campaign.

Data as of July 10, published by Moroccan authorities, reveal a significantly older electorate. Voters aged 60 and over represent 29% of the registered voters, while those aged 35 to 44 and 45 to 54 each make up 21%. Voters aged 25 to 34 account for 15%. Women represent 46% of the electorate, while men make up 54%.

The issue of youth has emerged prominently in the campaign following significant social tensions observed over the past year. Reuters reports that several major parties have made youth employment a key focus of their platforms in a country where youth unemployment remains high despite investments in infrastructure, industry, and transportation.

The election will renew the 395 seats in the House of Representatives. The Ministry of the Interior has recorded 1,850 candidate lists and 7,288 candidates, with 27 political parties participating in the competition. Among the incumbent representatives, 227 parliamentarians have submitted new candidacies.

The official campaign, which began on September 10, is set to conclude on September 22 at midnight. Authorities have also accredited over 3,000 national and international observers to monitor the various stages of the electoral process.
