Mono: Gas distributor summoned after non-compliant weight check

A domestic gas distributor in the Mono department has been summoned by the National Agency for Standardization, Metrology, and Quality Control (ANM) following a check that revealed a non-compliance issue regarding the weight delivered to consumers. The unannounced inspections, initiated on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, focused on sales points and stations in Grand-Popo and Lokossa.

At the halfway point of the operation, the ANM reported that it had inspected around ten sales points and stations. Only one case of non-compliance regarding the weight of domestic gas was identified. The checks aim to ensure that the quantity actually delivered to consumers matches the announced weight.

The operator in question has been summoned for the next steps in the procedure. The agency did not publicly detail the discrepancy found or the type of bottle involved in its interim report.

Mouhamed Nazif Moutawakilou, the Director General of the ANM, emphasized that consumers must receive the correct quantity at all sales points across the country. The agency stated that monitoring will continue beyond the preliminary findings recorded in Mono.

This operation comes just days after similar checks conducted by the same agency on the weight of cement bags in Porto-Novo and Pobè. Four sales points were flagged for weight non-compliance, and the affected bags were removed from sale, while the operators were summoned for further proceedings.

The ANM is responsible for metrology and ensuring the compliance of products marketed in Benin. Its field operations focus on the consistency between the quantities announced and those actually delivered or contained in the products sold, a check aimed at securing transactions between merchants and consumers.

In the domestic gas sector, these checks complement the regulations governing the distribution of petroleum products and the reform initiated by the Government to gradually standardize bottles and facilitate their exchange among distributors. At this stage of the inspection in Mono, only the identified case of non-compliance has been summoned for the continuation of the procedure.
