Malawi: EGENCO puts 10 MW of solar capacity into service in Salima.
Malawi has launched a 10 MW solar power plant in Nanjoka, located in the Salima district. Developed by the public company Electricity Generation Company Malawi (EGENCO), this installation represents the first phase of a project aiming to reach 50 MW in order to diversify a power system still largely dependent on hydroelectricity.
The solar plant was commissioned on August 10 in Nanjoka, in central Malawi. It is expected to help strengthen the national electricity supply as the country seeks to alleviate the constraints affecting its production system.
This facility marks the first step in a program with a total planned capacity of 50 MW. The available information does not yet specify the timeline for the subsequent phases.
The commissioning comes as part of Malawi’s efforts to broaden its energy mix. The country’s electricity production remains mainly secured by hydroelectric plants, which exposes supply to fluctuations in water resources.
The development of solar energy is thus expected to provide a complementary source of production and reduce the pressure on the hydroelectric fleet. EGENCO, the public company responsible for electricity generation, is driving this project as part of the national strategy for sector diversification.
The currently operational capacity of 10 MW is only a part of the target set for the site. Once the entire project is completed, the solar power installed in Nanjoka is expected to reach 50 MW, subject to the implementation of the next steps.
