Hakimi joins Morocco despite injury after suspension against Gabon
The captain of the Atlas Lions is indeed called up for the September window, but his first match is already blocked by a CAF suspension, and his right thigh remains under observation.
Achraf Hakimi will join the Morocco squad despite suffering a minor injury to his right thigh. Suspended for the opening match of the CAN 2027 qualifiers against Gabon on Friday, the captain of the Atlas Lions will remain under observation ahead of the trip to Lesotho.
Paris Saint-Germain announced on September 14 that their full-back was dealing with a slight thigh injury sustained during the 1-0 victory over Brest. Hakimi was substituted in the 39th minute and subsequently missed the Classique, which PSG won 2-1 against Marseille on Sunday.
Despite this setback, Mohamed Ouahbi has included him in the 29-man squad for Morocco for the matches against Gabon, Lesotho, and Ghana. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation confirmed that the gathering will begin on Monday, September 21.
However, Hakimi will not be able to play against Gabon on September 25. The CAF has suspended him for two official matches, one of which is a one-year suspended sentence, following the incidents during the CAN 2025 final. Therefore, the match in Rabat will count as the remaining match to serve.
Luis Enrique stated after the OM-PSG match that the player would join his national team and that the Parisian staff would remain in contact with Morocco to monitor his physical condition. Morocco will face Lesotho on September 29 in Bloemfontein, followed by a friendly against Ghana on October 4 in Tangier.
