Gabon ends free public transport as CNT launches with 149 vehicles

Gabon has ended free public transport with the operational launch of the National Transport Company (CNT), formed from the merger of Sogatra and Trans’Urb. The new state-owned company will start with a fleet of 149 vehicles and will gradually roll out intercity and urban routes.

The announced fleet includes 100 Eicher buses, 25 SML buses, and six Coaster-type vehicles. It also comprises 12 tank trucks, five semi-trailers, and one Canter truck for logistics activities. The government plans to fully maintain jobs and ensure the uninterrupted continuation of employment contracts from the two former companies.

The first phase will connect Libreville to several provincial capitals and economic hubs, including Lambaréné, Mouila, Lébamba, Tchibanga, Makokou, Oyem, and Bitam. A second phase will introduce nine urban lines in Greater Libreville, featuring 20 ticket sales points and 300 stops.

The return to a paid system will be accompanied by a progressive fare structure. Options such as “Social Pass,” “Student,” “Urban,” and “Family” are planned, along with daily or single-use tickets. For intercity trips, fares will vary based on the distances traveled.

The CNT will also implement “Gabon Mobilités,” a digital payment system and real-time tracking for buses and trucks. The new operator will also be responsible for freight transport, managing bus stations and multimodal exchange hubs, equipment rental, and training for industry jobs.

The bill establishing the CNT’s creation, responsibilities, and organization was adopted by the Council of Ministers on September 18, 2026, in Port-Gentil. The company will operate under the technical supervision of the Ministry of Transport, and its organization will be defined by statutes approved by a decree from the Council of Ministers.
