Food and nutrition in Benin: the government adopts a strategy for 2026–2030
The Government of Benin has adopted a national strategy on food and nutrition for the period 2026‑2030. The initiative aims to improve food security and the population’s nutritional quality through actions coordinated across the different sectors.
The Government of Benin has endorsed the new National Strategy on Food and Nutrition 2026‑2030. This roadmap should help strengthen governmental actions to ensure the population’s access to healthy food and to more effectively combat malnutrition forms that still affect several age groups.
The adopted strategy sits within a global vision of food security. It identifies priority areas to strengthen local production, improve the availability of nutritious foods, and encourage dietary practices that promote health. It calls for better coordination among the relevant ministries, local authorities, and technical and financial partners involved in the field.
According to authorities, the objective is to reach satisfactory nutrition levels for all Beninese, particularly young children, pregnant women, and vulnerable individuals. The strategic document also emphasizes raising population awareness and promoting diverse diets tailored to nutritional needs.
The new 2026‑2030 strategy intends to incorporate specific measures to combat micronutrient deficiencies, reduce the incidence of food insecurity, and improve the preparation and storage of foods.
Government officials stress the need for a multisectoral approach involving agriculture, health, education, and private sector actors.
This adoption constitutes an important step in the implementation of Benin’s commitments to nutrition, in line with long-term development objectives. It comes as the country faces the challenges linked to changing consumption patterns and the effects of climate change on food systems.
