Europa League: Sunderland wins 1-0 in return after 53 years
Sunderland defeated AZ Alkmaar 1-0 on Wednesday at the Stadium of Light thanks to a penalty from Enzo Le Fée. The Black Cats played their first European match since 1973 and turned this return into a victory.
Sunderland marked their return to European competition on Wednesday, September 16, by defeating AZ Alkmaar 1-0 at the Stadium of Light during their opening match of the Europa League. Enzo Le Fée scored the only goal from the penalty spot in the 66th minute.
The Black Cats played their first European match since 1973. Le Fée had already hit the post in the 25th minute, following a first half dominated by Sunderland, who were unable to break the deadlock.
AZ Alkmaar responded after the break, with Kees Smit narrowly missing the target in the 50th minute. Sunderland then earned a penalty, which Le Fée converted, sending goalkeeper Jari De Busser the wrong way.
The visitors pressed in the final quarter of an hour, but Robin Roefs made several close-range saves, and the English defense held firm until the end. This victory gives Sunderland their first three points of the league phase.
This match was one of the highlights of the opening day of the Europa League. It also marks Sunderland’s first European victory in 53 years, following a continental absence that dates back to 1973.
Sunderland will play again in the Europa League next month against Torreense.
