Europa League: Benfica beats Milan 2-0, a first in seven encounters
Benfica won 2-0 at San Siro, achieving their first official victory against AC Milan in the seventh encounter between the two clubs.
Benfica defeated AC Milan 2-0 on Wednesday, September 16, at San Siro to kick off their Europa League campaign, marking their first official victory against the Italian club in seven meetings. Dodi Lukébakio and Jakub Kamiński scored the two goals for the Portuguese side.
Lukébakio opened the scoring before halftime after a run from Kamiński, cutting in from the right to find the bottom corner. Benfica nearly doubled their lead when Georgiy Sudakov hit the post with a long-range effort.
After the break, Kamiński extended the advantage by converting a cross from Souffian El Karouani. Milan attempted to respond with the introduction of Christian Pulisic, but Anatoliy Trubin denied one of Milan’s best chances, maintaining the scoreline.
This victory ends Benfica’s six-match winless streak against Milan in European competitions. Prior to this match, the Rossoneri had recorded four wins and two draws against the Lisbon club, including the European Cup finals won in 1963 and 1990.
The second round of the Europa League is scheduled for October 15. Milan will travel to Salzburg, while Benfica will host Celtic in Lisbon.
