Eriksen leaves Wolfsburg nine months before the end of his contract

Christian Eriksen and Wolfsburg mutually agreed to end their collaboration on Wednesday, September 23. Originally set to run until June 30, 2027, the contract was terminated at the request of the Danish midfielder, who wishes to remain close to his family during his rehabilitation in Denmark.

“At this time, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark,” the 34-year-old player explained in the club’s statement. Sporting director Dieter Hecking clarified that Wolfsburg had accepted his request and wanted to leave the decision about his future in Eriksen’s hands.

Since July, Eriksen has been following an individual rehabilitation program in his home country. He has not played since suffering a health scare on June 7 during a friendly match for Denmark against Ukraine. In 2021, he had already experienced a cardiac arrest during the Euro before resuming his career with an implanted defibrillator.

The playmaker had joined Wolfsburg on a free transfer in September 2025, following his departure from Manchester United. He made 34 appearances in all competitions for the German club, scoring three goals and providing ten assists.
