Endorsement case: the government’s reaction after the court’s decision
A few minutes after the Constitutional Court’s decision to declare itself “incompetent as it stands” on the appeals relating to the sponsorship of the presidential duo of the party Les Démocrates, the government spokesman, Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji, reacted live on TikTok Live.
In his statement, the Deputy Secretary General of the government sought to clarify the position of the presidential majority.
” Within the presidential majority, we are not — and we have no reason to be — pleased with what is happening within the party Les Démocrates. “, says Wilfried Houngbedji.
According to him, this situation robs the movement of an opportunity to fairly face this political formation that calls itself the people’s party.
” We know that it was, once again, an opportunity to defeat this party and its candidates fairly and by the book in the 2026 elections. “, he insists.
Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji went on to remind that the presidential majority said it was ready to face Les Démocrates at the polls, “as in 2023, when they presented themselves as the largest party in Benin, but without reaching 20% in the 24 electoral constituencies”.
Furthermore, the head of state, Patrice Talon, is due to receive on Friday, October 24, former president Boni Yayi, current president of the party Les Démocrates. A meeting announced in a tense political context, the day after the Court’s decision, and seen as an attempt at appeasement between the two major figures of national political life.
This meeting could be the occasion for the movement to secure its desire to defeat Les Démocrates fairly at the polls. In times of political crisis, dialogue between institutions always remains a possibility.
