DRC: Party connects Goma to Rabat by bike for peace, Miguel Masaïsaï returns to Kinshasa in a coffin
He left Goma with the ambition of cycling approximately 14,000 kilometers to Rabat to deliver a message of peace. On Friday, September 25, the body of Miguel Masaïsaï returned to Kinshasa, one week after his death in a traffic accident in Ouesso, in northern Congo-Brazzaville.
SUMMARY
The Congolese cyclist launched his “Pedals for Peace” project on May 1, 2026. His route was intended to connect eastern DRC to Morocco, passing through several African countries. Through this journey, he aimed to promote peace, unity, and cohesion, with a particular focus on the people of eastern DRC.
Miguel Masaïsaï had already covered over 6,500 kilometers when he reached Kinshasa on August 5, after 67 days on the road. He resumed his journey on September 6 towards Congo-Brazzaville.
The trip came to a sudden halt on September 18 in Ouesso. His older sister, Ornella Masaïsaï, recounted how the family was informed of his death: “The passport found next to the body was Miguel’s.”
Cyclists accompany his body through Kinshasa
After his repatriation, the coffin was taken to Ngobila beach before being transported to the morgue of the Cinquantenaire hospital. A procession of cyclists accompanied the hearse through several streets of Kinshasa.
His death also sparked a widely shared false report on TikTok, claiming he had arrived in Cameroon. The Congolese news agency had to refute this post and clarify that he had died in Ouesso.
Miguel Masaïsaï was 25 years old.
