Donald Trump: “I won’t use force to acquire Greenland”
From the Davos forum, the U.S. President Donald Trump said he did not envisage any military action to take control of Greenland, while recalling the United States’ major strategic interest in this Danish autonomous territory.
The U.S. President Donald Trump assured this Wednesday that he did not intend to resort to force to take control of Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory, while reaffirming the United States’ strategic interest in this resource-rich island.
Speaking on the sidelines of a Davos summit before international leaders, Donald Trump sought to dispel any ambiguity about his intentions. “ I don’t need to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force“, he hammered, as his previous statements had fueled sharp questions within the international community.
However, the American president acknowledged that, theoretically, such an option could exist. “We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive force, to the point of becoming, frankly, unstoppable, but I won’t do it“, he added, before underscoring the deliberately deterrent nature of his remarks.
According to him, this stance aims above all to reassure. “This is probably the most important statement I’ve made, because people thought I was going to use force“, concluded Donald Trump, seeking to close a sensitive debate blending geopolitics, sovereignty and strategic interests.
