Champions League: Liverpool comes from behind to beat Atlético 2-1, Mac Allister decisive
After trailing at Anfield, Liverpool came from behind to defeat Atlético Madrid 2-1 on Wednesday, thanks to goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. The Reds start their group stage with three points, while the Madrid side leaves empty-handed despite Marcos Llorente's opening goal.
Liverpool kicked off their 2026-2027 Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid on Wednesday, September 9, at Anfield. After falling behind to a goal from Marcos Llorente, the Reds turned the match around thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai before halftime and Alexis Mac Allister shortly after the break.
Atlético struck first in the 17th minute. Julián Álvarez found Llorente behind the English defense, and the Spanish midfielder calmly finished past Alisson to score his fifth goal in three Champions League appearances at Anfield.
Liverpool equalized in the 40th minute. Following another period of pressure, Ronald Araújo played the ball into the box, and Szoboszlai found the far corner with a quick shot. The teams went into halftime level at 1-1.
The turning point came five minutes after the restart. Mac Allister intercepted a ball at the edge of the box and unleashed a left-footed shot that beat Jan Oblak, giving the Reds a 2-1 lead in the 50th minute. Liverpool then held on to this score until the final whistle despite Atlético’s attempts to equalize.
This victory marks a successful start for Andoni Iraola in his first Champions League match as a coach. It also allows Liverpool to secure three points on the opening day of the group stage, while Atlético begins their European campaign with a defeat.
The English club will travel to Austria to face LASK in their next Champions League fixture, scheduled for October.
