Benin: Customs seizes 3,000 hunting cartridges in Bétérou

The Beninese Customs announced a new seizure of ammunition in the northern part of the country. On Saturday, June 20, 2026, agents from the Regional Fraud Prevention Service Borgou-Alibori intercepted a vehicle in Bétérou transporting 3,000 caliber 12 hunting cartridges, according to a statement from the General Directorate of Customs.
The operation was conducted following a tip-off. The controlled vehicle was coming from Djougou and was heading towards Parakou. During the search, customs officers discovered twelve cartons hidden in the cargo. These cartons contained a total of three thousand hunting cartridges.
The driver of the vehicle, who allegedly attempted to flee at the time of the check, was arrested. According to the Beninese Customs, the seized ammunition along with the arrested person have been handed over to the relevant authorities for judicial proceedings.
A second seizure in less than two weeks
This operation comes just eleven days after another seizure carried out by the same service. This one involved 304.7 kilograms of psychotropic substances and 625 hunting cartridges.
For the General Directorate of Customs, these operations demonstrate the vigilance of the units engaged in the fight against illicit trafficking, cross-border crime, and threats that could jeopardize the safety of the population.
In its statement, the customs administration assures that it remains mobilized, alongside other defense and security forces, to contribute to the protection of the national territory and the preservation of peace in Benin.
