Benin: 2 fake “zémidjan” betrayed by their abandoned cell phone at the scene of a robbery
In Djakotomey, in the Couffo department, two individuals posing as motorcycle taxi drivers, commonly called Zémidjan, were apprehended by the police after a failed robbery.

The two individuals were betrayed by a forgotten mobile phone left behind at the scene of their crime.
The events took place on the night of June 5, 2025, around midnight, in the Azovè district. Targeting a passerby, the two crooks simulated a transport activity before violently assaulting him to steal his personal belongings, reports L’Investigateur.
But in their rushed escape, one of the thieves dropped his mobile phone, a decisive detail that would hasten their downfall. The next day, in a clumsy attempt to retrieve the device, the two fugitive accomplices sent two women to claim it as the owner.
The deceit did not fool the investigators. Law enforcement quickly made the connection and identified the real culprits of the robbery, thanks to the information contained in the phone.
The two suspects were arrested and taken into custody. They will now have to answer for their actions in court.
