Athletic Bilbao: Inaki Williams looks back on his difficult season
Aware of a difficult season in La Liga as in the Champions League, the captain of Athletic Bilbao, Inaki Williams, made a point of delivering a unifying message, promising a united and determined team to fight until the end.

The Ghanaian international Iñaki Williams, captain of Athletic Bilbao, acknowledged that the current season was proving particularly delicate for the Basque club, both in La Liga and in the Champions League. At San Mamés, Athletic are struggling to reproduce the momentum of the previous campaign, marked by a notable return to the European stage under Ernesto Valverde, after several years of absence. This season, the reality is more mixed. After 21 La Liga matchdays, the Lions sit in a modest 12th place on 24 points.
On the continental stage, the assessment is similar. In the group stage of the Champions League, the Bilbao club has alternated between good and not-so-good, with two victories, two draws and three losses in seven matches. An insufficient record that seriously jeopardizes direct qualification to the knockout phase. Athletic will therefore need to produce a near-perfect final day to hope to grab a spot in the play-offs.
Despite this challenging context, Iñaki Williams wanted to project a combative and unifying message. On his X account (formerly Twitter), the captain acknowledged the difficulties while reaffirming the team’s determination: « Things are not going the way we would like. We know it and we feel it. But this group remains united. The road is still long; we are still here and driven by the same ambition. »
The forward also sent a strong message to the supporters: « Thanks to your support, we will continue to fight every day, TOGETHER, until the end. Athletic Club NEVER GIVES UP. This team and its supporters will NEVER drop their arms. KEEP GOING! » On an individual level, Iñaki Williams is also having a season of mixed form. Hampered by several injury setbacks, the 31-year-old forward has played 19 matches across all competitions, scoring just one goal, well below his usual standards. A situation he hopes to reverse quickly to help his team turn the corner.
