With just days until the kick-off of the Africa Cup of Nations, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa put in reassuring performances in their respective friendlies, confirming a steady build-up in form ahead of the continental event.

At Pinatar Arena in Murcia, the Leopards dominated Zambia (2-0) in a match controlled from start to finish. Very enterprising from the outset, Sébastien Desabre’s men quickly took the initiative and were rewarded in the 21st minute by Arthur Masuaku, finishing off a spell of intense pressure.

Solid defensively, the Congolese contained Zambia’s ambitions, despite a livelier second half from the Chipolopolo. Despite greater possession and numerous attempts, Zambia ran into a well-organized block. DR Congo finally closed out the game in the 72nd minute thanks to Rocky Bushiri Kiranga, confirming their effectiveness on the break.

South Africa also finished their preparations on a positive note by beating Ghana (1-0) at Dobsonville Stadium. After a tight first half, Sipho Mbule made the difference shortly after the hour mark. The Black Galaxies tried to respond, without success. An encouraging win for Hugo Broos, while Ghana will need to work on their attacking sharpness before their next fixtures.
