World Cup 2026: Iran withdraws from the competition
Amid escalating geopolitical tension with the United States, Iran’s Minister of Sports Ahmad Doyanmali confirmed that Iran will not participate in the 2026 World Cup, a radical decision that could trigger FIFA sanctions.
The shadow of geopolitics already hangs over the FIFA World Cup 2026. While the tournament is to be held partly in the United States, Iran announced that it would refrain from participating in the tournament despite its sporting qualification. This decision was confirmed by Iran’s Minister of Sports, Ahmad Doyanmali, who justified this boycott by the current political tensions between Tehran and Washington. According to him, the international situation makes any participation by the national team in a country he accuses of hostility toward its government impossible.
In a particularly firm statement, the Iranian official said that no condition would allow his country to participate in the competition, notably citing the recent political and military events affecting the region. This announcement comes as FIFA President Gianni Infantino had recently stated that the Iranian team would be welcome in the United States. « More than ever, we need an event like the World Cup to bring people together », he had said, also praising the support expressed by U.S. President Donald Trump for hosting the tournament.
Iran was to evolve in a tough group alongside Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand. It remains to be seen how FIFA will react. The global body could consider sanctions in the event of an official boycott and will, if necessary, have to find a replacement nation to complete the competition lineup.
