The UN condemns the attempted coup d’état in Benin and praises the resilience of institutions
The United Nations responded to the attempted takeover by force that occurred on Sunday in Benin. The international organization expressed its concern and welcomed the failure of this effort, which aimed to destabilize the institutions of the Republic.

In a statement, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, said he had been closely following the events of 7 December, during which a group of soldiers attempted to undermine the constitutional order.
The diplomat denounced an action he described as dangerous to national stability and contrary to the fundamental principles of the Constitution and the rule of law.
The UN also welcomed the announcement made by the head of state, Patrice Talon, confirming that the attempt had been neutralized and that the situation had been brought back under control. Leonardo Santos Simão expressed his solidarity with the Beninese government, President Talon and the people, reaffirming the United Nations’ commitment to support the authorities in preserving public safety and tranquility.
The UN office for West Africa said it will continue its cooperation with regional organizations to support Benin in its efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen democracy and achieve lasting stability in the country.
