The Episcopal Conference of Benin condemns the attempted coup and calls for peace
In a communiqué dated 7 December 2025, the Episcopal Conference of Benin (CEB) expressed its deep concern over the attempted coup d’état that took place this Sunday. It firmly condemns any use of force as well as any action likely to undermine peace and national unity.
The text, issued under number 366/25/CEB, deplores the acts carried out against republican institutions, the regular forces and the Head of State. The bishops express their spiritual and moral solidarity with the president, those affected by the events and the bereaved families.
They pray for the victims and ask that peace and divine blessing accompany the entire country.
The Conference then calls on the Christian faithful and all people of goodwill to redouble their prayers in order to preserve Benin’s stability. It invokes the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and Queen of Peace, to watch over the nation and its inhabitants.
By this communiqué, the CEB asserts its role as guardian of the nation’s moral conscience in times of crisis. It reaffirms its determination to work for peace, reconciliation and national unity.
