SUMMARY

According to Western Cape police spokesperson Wesley Twigg, agents found Tsengwa in the vehicle on Ngxalo Street, with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene. One of the passengers, who was shot in the arm, was taken to the hospital.

Investigators have opened a case for murder and three attempted murders. According to initial information provided by the police, at least one assailant approached on foot, fired at the vehicle, and then fled. No arrests had been announced as of Thursday, August 20, and the motive remained unknown.

The official website of the Knysna municipality described Aubrey Tsengwa as the ANC councillor for ward 8. Elected as executive mayor on August 31, 2022, he was removed from this position by a motion of no confidence on February 14, 2025. He then regained his seat as councillor for ward 8 in a by-election held on June 25, 2025.

A municipal election scheduled for November 4

The South African local elections are scheduled for November 4, 2026. In May, the Electoral Commission assured Parliament that its operational preparations were underway, including for candidacies, printing the ballots, and securing the election.

The murder of Tsengwa follows several attacks on local political figures. On June 22, the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) called for increased measures after a deadly weekend in three provinces: a candidate was killed in Cape Town, a municipal councillor in Gqeberha, and two men linked to a party in the West Rand.

In the case of Aubrey Tsengwa, however, the authorities have not announced any links connecting the attack to his functions, his party, or the elections. The investigation has been assigned to the provincial unit responsible for serious and violent crimes.
