Rebel Wilson unveils ‘Girl Group’ in Toronto, featuring Mel C and Nicole Scherzinger

Rebel Wilson premiered ‘Girl Group’ at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, September 11. She serves as the writer, director, producer, and lead actress of this musical comedy. No theatrical release date has been announced yet.

The film follows a former girl band star who is sidelined from her group’s reunion tour and sentenced to community service. She must then mentor young singers preparing for an audition, according to the official TIFF presentation.

Wilson told Reuters that she envisioned the film as a celebration of five decades of music by female groups. The cast includes Melanie Chisholm from the Spice Girls, Shaznay Lewis from All Saints, as well as Ashley Roberts and Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls.

‘Girl Group’ marks the second film directed by the Australian actress, following ‘The Deb’, which was presented at the same festival in 2024 but has yet to be released due to ongoing legal proceedings. In July, a Sydney court ruled in favor of Wilson in a defamation case against actress Charlotte MacInnes, who has appealed the decision. A separate lawsuit filed in the United States by producers of ‘The Deb’ is still pending.

Wilson also stated that a studio initially rejected ‘Girl Group’ on the grounds that it was a female-centric project. She countered this argument by highlighting the commercial success of female ensemble films she has been part of, including ‘Bridesmaids’ and the ‘Pitch Perfect’ series.
