‘Prima Facie’: Cynthia Erivo aims to amplify the conversation on sexual violence

Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, ‘Prima Facie’ features Cynthia Erivo as a lawyer who confronts the system she once served after being assaulted by a colleague. This adaptation of Suzie Miller’s play explores consent and the judicial treatment of victims.

The British actress portrays Tessa, a brilliant criminal defense attorney accustomed to defending men accused of sexual assault. Her confidence in the workings of the courts is shaken when she herself is assaulted by a colleague and must face, this time as a complainant, the rules she once mastered.

In an interview in Toronto, Cynthia Erivo expressed her hope that the film will encourage conversations capable of producing tangible change. She emphasizes the need to involve men in this discussion so that the issue of consent is not solely carried by women and victims.

Directed by Susanna White, ‘Prima Facie’ adapts the successful play created by Australian author and lawyer Suzie Miller. Unlike the stage production, which is structured as a one-woman show, the film expands the narrative and brings several characters to life, including one played by Daniel Ings.

The actor portrays Julian, the colleague accused by Tessa. He acknowledged the challenges of the role while deeming it important to participate in a story that directly confronts male behavior and the ambiguities often invoked around consent.

Suzie Miller also hopes the film will help adults speak more clearly about these issues to younger generations. Director Susanna White presents the work as an invitation to examine the responsibilities of both institutions and individuals.

With a runtime of 106 minutes, this Australian-British co-production is part of the Gala selection at the Toronto Film Festival. Following its premiere on September 13, a new screening is scheduled for September 19, 2026, with fully accessible subtitles.
